Allentown artist Gregory Coates featured in Berlin show

ADA POST Presents:

Children of Paradise

February 19th – March 12th

Viewed by Appointment

Nordbahnstraße 10, 13409 Berlin, Germany. +49 (0) 30 51 06 02 24

Dada Post proudly presents our first exhibition of the 2011 season titled: Children of Paradise. This is a multigenerational exhibition presented under the banner of our yearlong Geopraxis program, and features ten highly diverse artists - who do not live or work in Berlin, although all (except one) lived or currently lives in New York.

The Artists:

Hugo Bastidas ¡ Dineke Blom ¡ Gregory Coates ¡ Edward Clark ¡ Asha De Costa ¡ Julie Durkin ¡ Nickolas Krushenick¡ Elizabeth Newman Kuiper ¡ Kazuko Miyamoto ¡ Alan Uglow

The exodus from New York over the past decade, to places like Los Angeles and Berlin, has been nothing short of amazing. It seems that New York's centrality to the art world has passed its peak, and is teetering under the weight of a “money creed with out culture”.

As Leonard Cohen famously sang: "First we'll take Manhattan, then we'll take Berlin."

Children of Paradise: in the case of this exhibition, is one that examines the interloper status (like an invasive species), which applies to non-indigenous species, or "non-native", animals whose introduction causes or is likely to cause economic harm, environmental harm, or harm to cultural autonomy. The term "invasive" is used for the most aggressive species. These species grow and reproduce rapidly, causing major disturbance to the areas in which they are present – thanks to drugs – sex- and rock n roll.

Geopraxis:

Seeking/Rejecting the Emblematic in Global Culture

Geopraxis is a Dada Post yearlong program of inquiry on the state of art practice of our current era of global society. It is a program initiated by Dada Post to examine the conditions and problems of the phenomenon of globalization, and its impact on art practice.

Is it true that any environment that attracts, sustains, and retains globally resourceful artists will inevitably flourish and blossom into something new and exciting? The colonization of Berlin by a steady influx of artists from all over the world since 1989 has resulted in a consequence where Berlin has become the new global center for the disparate ideas that currently inform every kind of contemporary art. The current Berlin art scene is diverse in its condition, and very focused on the arrival of its internationalization.

Notes from July 24th Dinner/Meeting

About 15 people attended the meeting on 7/24 at House of Chen. Some newcomers were welcomed. Hopefully we will see their work at a future show.

There were only a couple announcements to be made....

I announced an upcoming fire arts performance titled "In the Heat of the Night" at Union Terrace on August 14 starting at 8:30 p.m. The event will feature at least a dozen East Coast fire performers with poi, staff, hoops, fans, etc. This is an Idea Dome Production. All are welcome. Donations are accepted. Feel free to email me with any questions: chenarts.info@gmail.com

Ellen Kafkalas offered an update on the "Emergence" show. Postcards (featuring a nice, slick design by Chris Neyen) have come in. Ellen handed out stacks for distribution. Please spread the word about this show!

The opening will be held August 7 at 7 p.m. at Salemme Foundation, 542 W. Hamilton Street, second floor. About 28 artists are currently signed up to exhibit their work. The show will continue Monday-Friday from 11-2 until the closing at 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 21.

Art Mart coming soon...

A small group of us met Saturday at the former Allentown Opera House at 809-813 Hamilton. After viewing the two spaces available we decided to open the gallery at 813, where Greg Coates has been curating a window project called New Museum.

We plan to clean out the space and prep it for use as a gallery and shop called Art Mart. Please contact me if you would like to volunteer to help with the clean-up. We will also need volunteers to sit in the gallery (in pairs) on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 11-2 and on Fridays and Saturdays from 4-8 throughout the holiday season. Contact: chenarts.info@gmail.com

Art Mart will feature original artwork and handmade items for sale in a show titled: Holiday Gifts.

Pictures will be posted soon.

Downtown Gallery Show Planned for the Holidays

Here's the latest on the show planned for 809 W. Hamilton. Send your submissions ASAP:

New Museum Director, Gregory Coates, will curate a show titled "Holiday Gifts."

Greg is seeking artists who feel they can participate in a show which will take on the look of a "gift shop" by submitting art objects they have made or other objects they feel would fit this description. The items would be displayed (and offered for sale, unless otherwise specified) at the gallery at 809 W. Hamilton, which is in a great location across the street from Allentown Brew Works.

This gallery will be promoted to holiday shoppers - so think of things you have created that are likely to sell. That means paintings, sculpture, photos, cards, handmade trinkets like jewelry, pins, hats, scarves, bags, etc., etc....All artists are encouraged to decorate ornaments that can be offered for sale as well.

Again, Greg is requesting that artists send him 3 jpg images so he can view possible selections. Send images to coatesgregory4@gmail.com
Deadline for submission is Nov. 16. Set up will take place the following week, with an opening tentatively set for Black Friday, Nov. 27.

Volunteers will also be needed to help clean the space, hang work, and staff the gallery. Contact me at chenarts.info@gmail.com if you'd like to Volunteer in some way.

This was submitted by Yodi. This show features artists active in the Allentown Chen Arts Group:

The exhibit is at the Mayor Ed Pawlowski Campaign Headquarter on the west end of the city (2020 West Hamilton Street Allentown Pa). It will be a way for the artist to express their support for the Mayor of Allentown. The opening for the show is tomorrow, Saturday, April 11, 2009 from 1pm to 3pm.

Mayor Pawlowski is a long time supporter of the arts in all forms. The artwork will be displayed from April 11, 2009 through May 19th during the primary; a secondary show will be hung during the general election. So stop in often. A few of the artist will be on hand to discuss their artist styles. The artist include Chris Neyen, Gregory Coates, Mohamed Mansour, Rick Hildenbrandt, and Yodi Duane Vaden.
